Technology is affecting all areas of our lives, and bird scaring is no exception to this. Many people assume that birds need to be moved on from buildings and public areas, but pest bird species can be a huge problem for farmers too. The one thing in common with wherever they have to be moved from is that no one wants to cause them any harm.
Traditional Methods Of Bird Scaring
We have all seen scarecrows in farmer’s fields. Unfortunately so have the birds that have become used to them, and do not find them so scary these days. Birds of prey are another more traditional method, often using hawks. They are specially trained not to harm the other birds, but just the sight of them is enough for the pest bird to move their roosting and nesting elsewhere. This is still a very effective way of bird scaring.
The only issue with this is that eventually some of the birds will realise that the hawk is not a threat and will move back, then other ways need to be found to make their vacation more permanent. Pyrotechnics, blank firing or kite flying can be the answer.
New Technology Helping With Bird Scaring, And Conservation
New innovations will not only help with moving pest bird species, but will move them to areas more suitable for them. Gone are the days when conservation was just leaving them alone and the numbers will grow. Now conservationists can take an active roll in helping them, and that same technology can be used to move them away from areas they should not be,
Just one new innovation is medium powered lasers. They emit a green light which when projected onto the ground near the birds, scares them away. The lasers have a huge range, so from a farmer’s point of view they could quickly and easily scare pest birds away, including ones like eagles that might be there to attack livestock.
Research is being carried out to see if the same technology will work on mammals, so that rats can be kept our of grain stores, for instance.
