The inventor of the bird spike systems, David Jones from Devon, has defended the use of the system, which he has been manufacturing and distributing worldwide since 1998. He felt the need to make a defence after there was uproar because residents of two blocks of flats had them nailed to some trees to stop gulls and pigeons messing on their expensive cars.
Generally the bird spike system is used on buildings, on ledges and in nooks, to stop birds roosting in these places. As it is a better option than killing the birds, it is a popular way of dealing with pest bird species without harming them. For some people using them in trees was a step too far. Trees are a natural place for birds to nest, and apart from stopping their roosting, some people were complaining because of the damage caused to the trees by nailing the spikes to the branches. Also on buildings, the spikes are often too high to have a visual affect, but this is not the case with the trees.
Devon is not the first place people have wanted to protect their cars. Multi story car parks all over the country often use a bird spike system to protect their customers’ cars, but at least then there are no trees involved.
Finding A Balance
It is understandable that people want to protect their property. Bird droppings can be corrosive, particularly if left for any length of time. Whether it is a car or a building, cleaning up the mess they make is important, as it can also be a health hazard. However, the birds are not aware of this and they are just trying to get on with their life. It is just that sometimes we want them to nest and roost somewhere else.
Bird spike systems are perfect for this. Spikes might sound unpleasant and sharp, but they are designed in a way that is harmless, but makes roosting and nesting uncomfortable, so the birds move on.
A balance needs to be found that stops pest bird species causing damage, but does not interfere with nature. Bird Spike systems fit the bill.
